Santucci Takes Second Place to Lead Gannon Wrestlers at Ashland Open

Chris Santucci led four Golden Knights who placed at the Ashland Open with a second-place finish.

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Gannon wrestling team competed in the Ashland Open Saturday, November 15. Chris Santucci (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished second in the 133-pound weight class, as four Golden Knights placed.

Over 300 athletes wrestled in the event, which featured a number of Division I programs such as Ohio State, Michigan, Buffalo, and Eastern Michigan. No team scores were kept.

Santucci won his first four matches on his way to the finals before falling in his last contest. The runner-up position is Santucci’s best finish at Gannon.

Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) took fifth place in the 157-pound class. He went 5-2 on the day.

141-pounder A.J. Milanak (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) placed sixth in his bracket. The sophomore went 3-3 at the event. Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) also finished sixth. He went 2-2 in the 197-pound class.

The Golden Knights now have three weeks off before they compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Saturday, December 6.

Brittany Tabron

Women's Basketball

Tabron led the Gannon women's basketball team to a perfect 3-0 record during the holiday break. All three victories came against PSAC East clubs – Shippensburg (72-45), Kutztown (98-59), and East Stroudsburg (88-56). The junior forward averaged 20 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 65.7 percent (23-35) from the field. In addition, she was perfect in 14 free throw attempts during the holiday break. Tabron scored at least 18 points in every game, posting a career-high 24 points against Kutztown. She recorded her 10^th career double-double and third in 2008-09 with 18 points and 10 rebounds against East Stroudsburg. Tabron has reached double digits in four consecutive games and seven of the last eight. She is shooting 66 percent (27-41) during the last four games and has shot at least 64 percent in each game during that stretch. At the free throw line, Tabron has made 17 consecutive free throws overall.

Jacob Tazzi

Wrestling

Tazzi helped lead the Gannon wrestling team to a ninth-place finish out of 22 teams at the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis last weekend. The senior finished fourth in the 184-pound bracket. He opened the classic with a technical fall against Marcus Lopez of Carson Newman and a 7-2 victory over third-seeded Hiram Smith of Findlay. Tazzi entered the tournament as the sixth seed. On the second day, Tazzi lost to No. 2 seed Bryant Blanton of Newberry in the semifinals, but rebounded with a 4-0 victory over eighth-seeded Matt Alexander of Ohio Northern in the wrestlebacks. He then dropped a tight 3-2 decision in rematch against Smith in the third-place match. Tazzi finished 3-2 at the classic, moving his overall record to 15-9.
