SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - No. 11 Slippery Rock snapped a 1-1 tie with two goals in the final 20 minutes and posted a 3-1 victory over Gannon Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men’s soccer action.
Slippery Rock, ranked second in the Atlantic region and 11th nationally, needed only 5:27 to score the contest’s first goal. Thomas Pool accounted for the score by heading in a crossing pass from Toby Bowser for his third goal of the season.
Evan Chate (Vendays-Montalivet, France/Odilon Redon) tied the match at one in the 60th minute, knocking in a rebound off
Sean Washek’s (Fairview, Pa./Cathedral Prep) initial shot that was blocked by Slippery Rock goalkeeper Greg Blum.
The teams continued to battle back and forth until Slippery Rock took control in the final 20 minutes. Iain Langstone’s second goal of the campaign put the Rock back in front 2-1 at the 70:30 mark. Langstone took a pass from Michael Ramirez and beat the Gannon goalkeeper one-on-one.
Anthony Paganie added an insurance score with his first goal of the season on an uncontested breakaway in the 86th minute.
Gannon out-shot Slippery Rock 16-12 and held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) recorded three saves in his final collegiate match.
Head coach Rob van Rheenen’s squad concluded the 2009 season with a 6-10-2 overall record and 3-5 PSAC Western Division mark. Slippery Rock improved to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
