ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon wrestling team hosts the National Catholic Invitational Saturday, November 7. The event will feature grapplers from seven schools competing in a tournament for each weight class. The competition is set to start at 9 a.m. in the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
Gannon will square off with Mercyhurst, Mercyhurst Northeast, Duquesne, John Carroll, Notre Dame (Ohio), and Seton Hill.
The Golden Knights opened their 2009 season at the University at Buffalo Open Sunday, November 1.
Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was the Golden Knights’ top wrestler, taking third place in the 133-pound division. No other Knights placed at the event, but
Sean Floor (Westbrookville, N.Y./Port Jervis) and
Bret Terry (Canal Winchester, Ohio/New Albany) each won three matches in their weight classes.
GU placed fourth in the seven-team competition last season, as
Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) and
A.J. Milanak (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) each won gold in their divisions.
The Knights are ranked 17th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Preseason Top 20 poll. Mercyhurst is 11th in the same rankings.
