LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team opened the second day of the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship Saturday morning with a 14-5 loss to No. 17 Princeton. Bucknell University served as the host school.
Gannon fell behind early and could not recover. The Golden Knights were out-scored 2-1 in the first quarter and 7-1 in the second frame. Princeton extended its lead to 14-2 with a 5-0 shutout in the third quarter, before Gannon scored the only three goals of the final stanza.
Michael Piper (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) scored two of Gannon's five goals.
Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor),
John Krakowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and
Stephen Espinet (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Maple Leaf) netted one goal each.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) recorded five saves between the pipes.
Gannon dropped to 11-11 overall with Saturday's opening loss. Princeton improved to 11-10. The Golden Knights continue Saturday play at the CWPA Southern Division Championship against Penn State Behrend at 3:15 p.m.
