Gannon Swimming Prepares for PSAC Championships This Weekend

ERIE, Pa.- The Gannon women’s and men’s swimming teams head to Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships February 18-21. Cumberland Valley High School will be the site and East Stroudsburg University will host the event this weekend. 

Twenty-seven Golden Knight swimmers have qualified for the competition. The women’s contest will feature 13 schools, while the men has seven teams competing. Results from the meet will be available at http://www.esuwarriors.com/news/2010/1/4/WSWIM_2010PSAC.aspx

The Lady Knights have won eight of 10 team events this season. They are led by the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Rachel Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary). The group has qualified for nationals next month. It is the second straight season the 400 relay team has advanced to the national event. Jackie Rzymek has set school records in the 100 and 200 butterfly events this season. Bosy set a school record in the 100 freestyle as well. The 200 medley relay team of Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Rachel Rzymek, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy also set a Gannon record with a 1:47.78 swim. The women’s team has 13 swimmers going to PSACs. 

The men will send 14 swimmers to the event. Kyle Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and John Krakowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) lead the way for the Knights. Lazenby is GU’s top backstroker, qualifying for the conference meet in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke races. Krakowski advanced to PSACs last season and will take part in the 50 and 100 freestyle events in 2010. 

Each swimmer can participate in three events and four relay races at the meet. A complete list of qualifiers for Gannon-

Nick Wolhaupter
Men's Swimming and Diving
Wolhaupter was a quadruple-winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon men’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 50-yard freestyle (22.03) for the third time in six attempts, producing a PSAC-qualifying time for the fifth time. He won the 100-yard freestyle (48.53) for the fifth time in seven attempts, recording a conference-qualifying time five times. Wolhaupter then finished third in the 100-yard butterfly while producing his fifth PSAC-qualifying time during that event in six attempts. The Watertown, Wis., native was part of two relay teams that won titles. His 200-yard freestyle relay team won its third title in eight attempts and his 400-yard medley relay team captured its first championship in three tries. Wolhaupter helped his 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay teams finish second. He has won 12 individual titles and been part of nine relay titles this season. Wolhaupter has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times this season.
Katie Joseph
Women's Swimming and Diving
Joseph was a five-time winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon women’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 100-yard freestyle (54.04) for the seventh time in eight attempts, posting a PSAC-qualifying time every time. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.47) for the fourth time this season while producing her seventh conference-qualifying time during the event in eight attempts. Joseph also finished third in the 200 IM (2:17.48) during her first attempt of the year. The McDonald, Ohio, native was part of three relay teams that won titles. Her 200-yard freestyle relay team captured its sixth title in as many attempts, her 400-yard freestyle relay team won its sixth title in eight tries and her 800-yard freestyle relay team captured its third title in as many attempts. Joseph has won 15 individual titles and been part of 18 relay titles this season. She has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times and four NCAA “B” cut times this season.
