ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s basketball team remained third for the second consecutive week in the latest USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday afternoon. It represents the highest national basketball ranking in school history regardless of gender. The Gannon men’s basketball team was tabbed third nationally on February 8, 1988.

The nation’s top five remained unchanged. Franklin Pierce (19-0) is still No. 1 for the fifth straight week, receiving 23 first-place votes and 667 points. The University of Indianapolis (21-0), Gannon (22-0), Michigan Tech (18-1) and Emporia State (Kan.) (19-1) completed the top five. Indianapolis captured three first-place votes while Gannon received one first-place vote.

Fort Lewis (Colo.) (20-2), Arkansas Tech (18-1), the University of California-San Diego (17-1), West Texas A&M (20-2) and Lander (S.C.) (18-1) rounded out the top 10.

Head coach Cleve Wright’s squad is one of two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams listed in the top 25. California (Pa.) dropped two spots and is tabbed 22nd.

Bowie State (Md.) also represents the Atlantic Region in the top 25, being ranked 25th. Virginia State, Shaw (N.C.) and West Liberty State (W.Va.) were the other Atlantic region programs that received votes, but did not appear in the top 25.

Gannon moved to 22-0 for the first time in school history with PSAC Western Division victories over Edinboro (79-67) and Lock Haven (74-51) last week. The Lady Knights have won 32 consecutive regular-season games dating back to last season. The program’s last regular-season loss was a 65-52 setback at Indiana (Pa.) on January 24, 2009.

Gannon (22-0, 6-0) returns to action Wednesday, February 3 at rival Mercyhurst. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the Internet at http://www.gannon.edu/athletics/werg/knightsound.html. The game will not be televised. Tickets will be available Wednesday, February 3 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. If tickets are still available, they will also be sold at the door.
