Women's 200 Medley Relay Leads Gannon Swimming on Day Three of PSAC Championships

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Gannon swimming teams continued competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Saturday with 14 events. Through three days, the women stand fifth out of 13 teams and the men are sixth out of seven teams. Cumberland Valley High School is the site of the meet. 

The Lady Knights were led by the 200 yard medley relay team, which qualified for nationals with a time of 1:46.92 in the race. Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Rachel Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) teamed up to finish fourth. Jackie Rzymek took fifth in the 100 butterfly. She posted a 57.80, good enough for a ‘B’ standard for nationals. Sam Bluhm (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) and Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle, setting ‘B’ standards also. Rachel Ryzmek swam a 1:07.18, touching the wall seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke and posting a ‘B’ time for nationals. The 800 free relay team of Bosy, Sarah Anderson (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Hess, and Bluhm placed fourth with a 7:48.07 time. 

Mitchel Meighen (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Mike Kneidinger (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African Collage), and Josh Marzilli (Riverview, Fla./East Bay) combined to record a school-record 7:03.44 in the 800 yard free relay. They posted a fifth-place finish. The men’s 200 medley relay placed seventh. In the 100 breaststroke, Meighen finished fifth. He swam the event in 59.42 seconds. 

West Chester leads both the men’s and women’s fields in the overall team standings. The Ram men have 553 total points, while Clarion has 308 in second place. GU has 200 team points. West Chester’s women have posted 521 points. Clarion is in second with 441.5 and the Lady Knights have 229 points. The teams will close out action Sunday, February 21, as part of the four-day meet. Nick Wolhaupter
Men's Swimming and Diving
Wolhaupter was a quadruple-winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon men’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 50-yard freestyle (22.03) for the third time in six attempts, producing a PSAC-qualifying time for the fifth time. He won the 100-yard freestyle (48.53) for the fifth time in seven attempts, recording a conference-qualifying time five times. Wolhaupter then finished third in the 100-yard butterfly while producing his fifth PSAC-qualifying time during that event in six attempts. The Watertown, Wis., native was part of two relay teams that won titles. His 200-yard freestyle relay team won its third title in eight attempts and his 400-yard medley relay team captured its first championship in three tries. Wolhaupter helped his 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay teams finish second. He has won 12 individual titles and been part of nine relay titles this season. Wolhaupter has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times this season.
Katie Joseph
Women's Swimming and Diving
Joseph was a five-time winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon women’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 100-yard freestyle (54.04) for the seventh time in eight attempts, posting a PSAC-qualifying time every time. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.47) for the fourth time this season while producing her seventh conference-qualifying time during the event in eight attempts. Joseph also finished third in the 200 IM (2:17.48) during her first attempt of the year. The McDonald, Ohio, native was part of three relay teams that won titles. Her 200-yard freestyle relay team captured its sixth title in as many attempts, her 400-yard freestyle relay team won its sixth title in eight tries and her 800-yard freestyle relay team captured its third title in as many attempts. Joseph has won 15 individual titles and been part of 18 relay titles this season. She has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times and four NCAA “B” cut times this season.
