Young Gannon Swimming and Diving Looks to Future After 2009-2010 Success

The Gannon swimming teams will lose four seniors from the 2009-2010 squad.
ERIE, Pa.- Despite youth across both rosters, the Gannon women's and men's swimming and diving teams had success in 2009-2010. The Lady Knights had five All-Americans and went 8-2 in dual meets, while the men went 5-5 on the season.

The women sent seven athletes to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Canton, Ohio March 10-13. Rachel Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary), Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Diana Rocco (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), and Megan Beresford (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) all qualified for nationals.

As a team, Gannon took 29th at the meet. Rocco became a three-time All-America, earning honors in the one-meter dive. The 200 and 400 yard relay team of Rachel Rzymek, Hess, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy earned All-America awards as well. The 200 free team placed 12th and the 400 team finished 16th at nationals.

In its second year in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Gannon featured just four seniors. The team still got off to a good start, as the men and women both won the Westminster Relay Meet to begin the season.

The women then won five of their first six dual contests before heading to the Mid-Season Invite at Wooster. The Lady Knights placed second in the 10-team field in December. From there, GU took three of its last four duals. The women finished sixth at the PSAC Championships in February.

The men won five dual meets in a row midway through the campaign, including a come-from-behind 119-115 win over Allegheny College November 13. The men would go on to take sixth at the conference championship meet.

Twenty-seven Gannon swimmers qualified for PSACs. Jackie Rzymek set school records in the 100 and 200 butterfly events this season. Bosy set a school record in the 100 freestyle as well. The 200 medley relay team of Lawton, Rachel Rzymek, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy also set a Gannon record with a 1:46.92 swim.

John Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) is the lone senior on the men's team, while the women will lose Rachel Rzymek, Elizabeth Morse (Pendleton, N.Y./Starpoint Central), and Ashlee Calandra (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier). With a lot of experience returning next season, the Gannon swimming program appears headed in the right direction and should compete for a conference title in the near future.
