Seven Lady Knights Head to Swimming and Diving Nationals in Canton this Week

ERIE, Pa.- The Gannon women’s swimming and diving team will send seven athletes to the NCAA Division II National Championships March 10-14 in Canton, Ohio. Swimmers Rachel Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Sarah Lawton (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), and Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) and divers Megan Beresford (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and Diana Rocco (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) will represent the Lady Knights at nationals.

The event will be divided into four days, with trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. On the first day, Rachel Rzymek, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy will compete in the 50 yard freestyle. Rocco and Beresford will participate in the three-meter dive. Lawton, Rachel Rzymek, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy and will swim in the 200 yard medley relay. 

On Thursday, Rachel Rzymek, Hess, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy and will team up in the 200 free relay. Jackie Ryzmek will compete in the 100 butterfly and Bosy and Hess will swim in the 200 free. The 400 medley relay team of Lawton, Rachel Rzymek, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy will close out Gannon’s day two action. 

Rachel Rzymek will kick off the third day by swimming the 100 yard breaststroke. Jackie Rzymek will follow in the 200 butterfly and Rocco and Beresford will compete in the one-meter dive. 

The final day will feature Rachel Rzymek, Bosy and Hess in the 100 free. The Lady Knights will end the meet with the 400 free relay. Rachel Rzymek, Hess, Jackie Rzymek, and Bosy will look to finish strong for GU in Canton.

Rachel Rzymek, Bosy and Hess qualified in the 400 freestyle relay last season. The Knights finished 23rd in the 33-team field in 2009. Rocco and Beresford both earned all-America honors at the event.

Nick Wolhaupter
Men's Swimming and Diving
Wolhaupter was a quadruple-winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon men’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 50-yard freestyle (22.03) for the third time in six attempts, producing a PSAC-qualifying time for the fifth time. He won the 100-yard freestyle (48.53) for the fifth time in seven attempts, recording a conference-qualifying time five times. Wolhaupter then finished third in the 100-yard butterfly while producing his fifth PSAC-qualifying time during that event in six attempts. The Watertown, Wis., native was part of two relay teams that won titles. His 200-yard freestyle relay team won its third title in eight attempts and his 400-yard medley relay team captured its first championship in three tries. Wolhaupter helped his 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay teams finish second. He has won 12 individual titles and been part of nine relay titles this season. Wolhaupter has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times this season.
Katie Joseph
Women's Swimming and Diving
Joseph was a five-time winner at last weekend’s Indiana (Pa.) Invitational, helping the Gannon women’s swim team split a pair of dual match-ups against IUP and Bloomsburg. The true freshman won the 100-yard freestyle (54.04) for the seventh time in eight attempts, posting a PSAC-qualifying time every time. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.47) for the fourth time this season while producing her seventh conference-qualifying time during the event in eight attempts. Joseph also finished third in the 200 IM (2:17.48) during her first attempt of the year. The McDonald, Ohio, native was part of three relay teams that won titles. Her 200-yard freestyle relay team captured its sixth title in as many attempts, her 400-yard freestyle relay team won its sixth title in eight tries and her 800-yard freestyle relay team captured its third title in as many attempts. Joseph has won 15 individual titles and been part of 18 relay titles this season. She has produced 23 PSAC-qualifying times and four NCAA “B” cut times this season.
