INDIANA, Pa. - The Gannon University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Indiana (Pa.) Friday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks won 11-1 in the opener and then took a 6-4 decision in the nightcap. With the losses, GU has been knocked out of contention for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
IUP scored first in the second contest, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The Golden Knights responded with the tying run in the third frame, as
Kyle Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) singled to leftfield and then stole second base. He eventually scored on a
Jeff Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) single.
Indiana regained the edge in the fourth inning with a run and then tacked on four more scores in the fifth. Down 6-1, Gannon rallied with three runs in the sixth inning, but could not complete the comeback, falling 6-4.
Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) led off with a walk and Jones followed with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season.
Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) then singled up the middle and later came around to score on a Harpster groundout.
Jones went 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Jordan Bergado (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had two hits and Hoffman had a hit and a run scored.
Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) took the loss, going six innings. He allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out three batters.
In the first game, Gannon got on the board first, but Indiana took over from there.
Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) singled to lead off the game and then
Brandon Crum (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) advanced him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. After a walk, Bergado followed with a base hit up the middle, scoring Lipp.
IUP answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added another score in the third to go up 3-1. The Hawks scored eight more times in the next three frames to take control and win 11-1.
Lipp went 2-3 with a run scored and Hoffman had three hits, including a double. Tomko also had a two-bagger.
The Knights (20-21, 11-11 PSAC) will host IUP (28-21, 17-5 PSAC) tomorrow for a season-ending doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Gannon University Field. GU will now focus on posting its first winning record since 1985.
