Gannon Announces 2010 Senior Student-Athletes of the Year

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon Director of Athletics Mark Richard announced the 2010 Senior Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year at the inaugural Student-Athlete Banquet hosted Monday evening in the Yehl Ballroom of the Waldron Center.

Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) was named Female Student-Athlete of the Year while Jon Richardson (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) and Corey Bowers (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) were named Co-Male Student-Athletes of the Year.

Freeman received a plethora of post-season accolades as a senior member of the Gannon women's basketball team. The senior guard helped Gannon win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division regular-season title, the PSAC Tournament championship and the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship en route to the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Final Four appearance. The squad spent three consecutive weeks as the No. 1 team in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 and finished the season with a 37-1 record.

The Yonkers, N.Y., native was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America first team and the Women's Division II Bulletin All-America second team. Her loaded 2009-10 resume included being the PSAC Western Division Player of the Year, as well as landing a spot on the WBCA All-Region first team for the second consecutive season.

Freeman averaged 13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, two steals and 1.1 blocks in 38 starts. She shot 49.3 percent (188-381) from the field, 35 percent (43-123) from three-point range and 74.5 percent (108-145) from the free throw line.

Freeman ranked fourth among PSAC players in field goal percentage, sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), ninth in three-point field goal percentage, 11th in free throw percentage, 12th in blocked shots per game, 14th in scoring and 15th in steals per game.

Richardson concluded his collegiate career as one of the best players in the history of the Gannon football program. The senior tailback capped his career by becoming the fifth player in school history to play in the Cactus Bowl, which is the NCAA Division II All-Star Game. In addition to landing a spot on the Football Gazette All-Super Region One third team, he was a three-time all-conference selection, being named to the All-PSAC Western Division first team this season.

Richardson rushed for 943 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per carry during the 2009 campaign. In addition, he caught 22 passes for 145 yards and averaged 29 yards on two kickoff returns. In all, he produced 104.2 all-purpose yards per game.

The Warren, Ohio native ranked second among PSAC players in points per game (8.7), third in rushing yards per game (85.7) and sixth in all-purpose yards per game. He finished 18th among all NCAA Division II players in scoring and 42nd in rushing.

Richardson concluded an unbelievable collegiate career as Gannon's all-time leader in all-purpose yards (3,891) and points (222). He ranks third all-time at Gannon in rushing yards (2,790), third in 100-yard rushing games (12), fifth in receptions (97), sixth in total offense (2,790) and eighth in receiving yards (716).

Bowers made Gannon history by becoming the school's first-ever PSAC Wrestling Champion when he won the 133-pound title last December. The senior advanced through the championship which featured four NCAA Division I programs. He defeated NCAA Division I Jay Ivanco of Clarion 4-3 in the finals.

Bowers became a two-time All-American when he placed sixth at this year's NCAA Division II National Championships. He advanced to the championship semifinals, before suffering his first loss. Bowers was also the East Region's 133-pound runner-up.

The Pasadena, Md., native finished 31-8 overall with 11 pins this season, including a 9-3 record in dual matches. Among his 2009-10 accomplishments were individual titles at the National Catholic Invitational and the East Stroudsburg Open.

Bowers finished his collegiate career with a 64-22 record with 22 pins. His career winning percentage of .744 is the third-highest in school history and his 22 career pins is among Gannon's all-time top 10.
