SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Gannon men’s soccer team won its first match of the season after posting a 4-0 victory over New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) at the Le Moyne Tournament in Syracuse, New York.
For head coach Rob van Rheenan the win today makes it 133 victories at the helm of the Golden Knights soccer prgoram and ties Rob Russo’s school record for coaching wins. van Rheenen, in his 14th season coaching the Golden Knights, will have the chance to break the record in front of a home crowd on Wednesday, September 8 when Gannon hosts West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Golden Knights started the scoring in the eighth minute when
Evan Chate (Vendays-Montalivet, France / Odilon Redon) served up the ball from the left side and the
Billy Prebis (Hinckley, Ohio / Highland) header found the back of the net.
Ten minutes later
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) stretched the lead to 2-0 after a pass from
Tyler Hollingsworth (Johannesburg, South Africa / St. David’s Marist Inanda).
The Golden Knights wasted no time in adding to their lead when
Adam Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa. / Knoch) scored his second goal of the season off a free kick from Chate.
Austin Miller (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) scored the final goal of the day from four yards out off a pass from Latifi.
Gannon out-shot NYIT 17-10 on the day despite NYIT holding a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Mike Kickel (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) earns his first career shutout, recording 3 saves in the game.
Gannon improves to 1-1 on the season while NYIT falls to 0-2. The Golden Knights will play its first home match at Gannon University Field on Wednesday, September 8 at 3:00 p.m.
