ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s soccer team is ranked sixth in the initial National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic regional rankings released this week.
California (Pa.) and Shippensburg tied for the top ranking. California (Pa.) is 2-0 after opening the season with victories against Seton Hill (6-1) and Charleston (1-0). Shippensburg posted a 3-1 victory against Charleston during its lone action of the campaign. West Chester (2-0), Kutztown (2-0) and Indiana (Pa.) (1-0) completed the top five.
Gannon (1-0), Slippery Rock (2-0), Bloomsburg (1-0), Mercyhurst (2-0) and East Stroudsburg (1-0-1) are tabbed sixth through nine. Edinboro (2-0) and Anderson (S.C.) (2-0) are deadlocked for 10th place. Only matches through Sunday, September 5 were considered for the rankings.
Head coach Colin Petersen’s team has since moved its record to 1-0-1 after battling West Virginia Wesleyan to a double-overtime, scoreless tie Monday evening.
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career.
Gannon returns to action this weekend with a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) road matches. The Lady Knights travel to Mansfield Friday, September 10 for a 4 p.m. start and Kutztown Saturday, September 11 for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
