PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Gannon wrestling team grabbed its seventh dual win of the season Wednesday evening with a 39-6 rout of Lake Erie. The Golden Knights earned wins in eight of the 10 bouts on the night, grabbing bonus points in six of them.
Lake Erie took an early 3-0 lead with a win in the 125-pound bout, but the Storm forfeited the next three weight classes, giving Gannon an 18-3 lead.
Sam Brehm (Wexford, Pa. / Pine-Richland) continued the scoring for Gannon, earning a 4-2 win over Zev Green. The redshirt sophomore earned a takedown and an escape en route to his 13th win of the season.
Grabbing a win by technical fall in the 165 pound bout was Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area). The redshirt senior jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the first period, with three takedowns and two nearfall points. He finished with six takedowns and four nearfall points en route to his 104th career win.
McKendree is now just three wins shy of tying Gannon's all-time wins record of 107 set by Todd Proper (1998-2001). His 28 wins this season are tied for 18th most on Gannon's single-season list. His 11-0 record in dual meets is tied for 11th most on the single-season dual wins list. McKendree is poised to complete just the seventh undefeated dual season with at least 10 wins in Gannon history.
Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) kept Gannon rolling with a 7-4 win over Josh Linden. In a close bout, Petrella earned an escape and a takedown in the final period to earn his 16th win of the season.
Chris Boyd (Chase City, Va. / Randolph Henry) earned his first major decision of the year with an 11-3 win over Jared Merritt. Boyd had two takedowns in both the first and second period in the bout. He now stands at 12-10 overall with a 7-3 mark in dual meets.
Lake Erie picked up their only other win in the 197-pound bout before Jimmy Martz (Hookstown, Pa. / Southside Beaver) capped off the dominating night with a pin of Bobby Hager 1:56 into the match. The redshirt junior is now 4-2 in dual meets this season.
