GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon wrestling team cruised to a dual win on Friday night over the Griffins of Seton Hill by a 41-3 score. Gannon won all but one bout on the night, grabbing bonus points in six weight classes.
No. 5 Jose Matos (Williamstown, N.J. / St. Augustine College Preparatory School) started the scoring for Gannon at 125 pounds with a 9-5 victory over Kenny Trumbetta. The junior's 9-5 decision is the second win over Trumbetta this season after defeating him in the final of the National Catholic Invite. Trumbetta entered the match as the fourth best grappler in the region.
In the 133-pound bout, John Fleming (Bethel Park, Pa. / Lakeview) grabbed four team points for the Golden Knights with a 10-1 major decision over Josh Tests. Fleming is now 10-7 this season with a 6-2 record in dual meets.
Redshirt senior #A.J. Milanak# (Apollo, Pa. / Kiski Area) earned a 4-3 decision at 141 pounds to give Gannon a 10-0 lead.
Sean Floor (Westbrookville, N.Y. / Port Jervis) improved to 10-10 overall and 2-0 in dual meets with his fourth pin of the season. The win came at the 6:05 mark of the bout.
Zack McKendree (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) earned his 29th win of the season with a win by pinfall in the 165-pound bout at the 1:58 mark. McKendree is now just two wins shy of tying Gannon's all-time wins record of 107 set by Todd Proper (1998-2001). His 29 wins this season are tied for 15th most on Gannon's single-season list. His 12-0 record in dual meets is tied for 4th most on the single-season dual wins list.
No. 2 Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) improved to 17-2 this season and completed a perfect dual record of 11-0 with a 27-11 technical fall over Joshua Volker. Along with fellow senior Zack McKendree, the two complete just the seventh and eighth undefeated dual season with at least 10 wins in Gannon history.
Jimmy Martz (Hookstown, Pa. / Southside Beaver) finished the regular season for Gannon with a 4-3 double-overtime win over Ron Oswald. Martz previously lost to Oswald in the redshirt junior's first match of the season. Oswald entered the match ranked sixth in the region as a heavyweight. The win capped the 41-3 win for the Golden Knights.
Richie Russell (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) and Sam Brehm (Wexford, Pa. / Pine-Richland) both earned wins by forfeit on the night. Gannon finishes the regular season with a 9-2-1 dual record while Seton Hill fell to 4-13-1.
Gannon University is the host for the 2011 NCAA Division II Wrestling Super Regional which takes place Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26. The two-day event will feature grapplers from 13 different schools, all competing at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
