ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team came up just short of earning their second win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Knights dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 decision to Washington & Jefferson at the Carenval Athletic Pavilion.
The two teams traded goals in the first quarter with Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) tying the score twice after netting Gannon's first two goals. Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) added the Golden Knights third goal of the quarter tying the score at three.
In the second quarter Washington & Jefferson took a 4-3 lead before Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) tied the score again. However, the Presidents went on to score five of the next seven goals, holding their largest lead of the match, a 9-6 edge. Kyle Lazenby (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) added a goal in the final seconds of the third quarter putting the score at 9-7 heading into the fourth.
Gannon pulled within one thanks to a goal from Cody Sherman (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) but Washington & Jefferson stretched its lead to two just 30 seconds later. Takagi netted his third goal of the day with 1:46 left to make the score 11-10. The Golden Knights had the ball with 41 seconds left, but the President's defense prevented Gannon from coming up with the tying score.
Lazenby and Takagi each had a team-high three goals while Sherman, Myrick, Nelson and Jacob Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) each netted one score. Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had 11 blocks and one steal in goal.
The Golden Knights fall to 1-5 this season while Washington & Jefferson earns the win in its first match of the season. Gannon is on the road for its next match against Notre Dame College on Saturday, September 17. Match time is scheduled for 12 noon.
