Gannon Moves to Sixth in Latest Regional Rankings; Five Grapplers Tabbed Indvidually

Matt Turek is ranked sixth in the region at 125 pounds for the second straight week.
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon wrestling team made another move up in the latest NCAA Division II regional rankings to sixth. In addition, Golden Knights are ranked in five of the 10 weight classes. 

Defending Super Regional One champion and second-ranked team in the country, Newberry is tabbed first in the region. Pitt-Johnstown jumped over Mercyhurst after the Mountain Cats defeated the Lakers last week. Mercyhurst fell to third ahead of West Liberty and Kutztown.

Gannon is sixth, followed by American International, Shippensburg, UNC-Pembroke, East Stroudsburg, Seton Hill, Anderson and Ohio Valley to round out the 13-team region.

Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) retained the top spot in the 149-pound division. The redshirt senior holds a 9-3 overall record with a perfect 7-0 mark in duals. All three of his losses this season have come against Division I foes. Swope finished sixth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. The 2011 NCAA qualifier at 149 has two major decisions, one tech fall and one pin this season.

Zack Zelcs (Ridgway, Pa. / Ridgway) held on to the third spot in the region at 184 pounds. The redshirt freshman holds a 12-7 overall record this season, but only one of those losses have come against a Division II foe. He took third at this season's PSAC Championships. Zelcs has won 10 of his last 11 bouts, picking up three pins, two major decisions and tech fall during the stretch.

Matt Turek (Painesville, Ohio / Madison) sits sixth in the region at 125 pounds. The redshirt freshman took sixth at the PSAC Championships with two wins. He finished 3-0 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Duals, recording a pin and two tech falls. He holds an 8-8 overall record with a 4-3 mark in dual meets.

Adam Weinell (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville) remained sixth at 133 pounds. He finished fourth at the Buffalo Open with a 3-2 record before taking third at the Mercyhurst Open with a 4-1 mark. he is 16-8 overall with a 6-1 mark in dual meets. Weinell is the team leader in pins with seven and owns three major decisions. 

Bret Terry (Canal Winchester, Ohio / New Albany) makes an appearance in the regional rankings for the first time at 174 pounds. Terry, who previously qualified for the 2010 NCAA tournament at 165 pounds, holds a 7-4 overall record. The redshirt senior is third on the team in dual wins with a 5-2 record. He has one pin this season.
