Local Wrestling Battle Ends With Gannon Falling to Mercyhurst 23-13 (Video)

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon wrestling team trailed by just one point heading into the final two bouts of the evening, but Mercyhurst pulled off wins at 197 and heavyweight to lock up a 23-13 win Thursday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Opening the night at 125 pounds, Matt Turek (Painesville, Ohio / Madison) lost a 7-6 decision to Ryan Bohince. The reshirt freshman earned a takedown in the final minute of the third period, but was just two seconds shy of recording a riding-time point that would have forced overtime. 

Adam Weinell (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville) evened the score at three thanks to a 7-6 overtime win. Battling against Kody Young who had previously beaten him twice this season, Weinell earned a takedown during the overtime period to win the bout.

Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) was able to answer a major decision from Mercyhurst at 141 with a major of his own at 149. The redshirt senior, who is currently ranked fifth in the country picked up two takedowns in the third period to add bonus points for Gannon.

Jordan Shields added four team points for Mercyhurst at 157 pounds with a 9-0 major decision. Adam Greenman (Port Allegany, Pa. / Port Allegany) nearly recorded a pin during the first round of the 165-pound bout but Adam Lamancusa was able to avoid the six-point win. Greenman went on to win the match 7-1 to make the score 11-10 in favor of Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst extended the lead to 14-10 with an 8-4 decision at 174 pounds before Bret Terry (Canal Winchester, Ohio / New Albany) won by a 3-2 score at 184 pounds to cut the lead back to one. 

At 197, Mercyhurst's Michael Pollard built a 6-1 lead after the first period before Zack Zelcs (Ridgway, Pa. / Ridgway) added an escape and a takedown, putting the score at 6-4. However, Zelcs was unable to score the rest of the way, giving Mercyhurst a 17-13 edge. Fred Hale capped the scoring for Mercyhurst with a pin at heavyweight for a final of 23-13.

The Gannon wrestling team suffered just its second dual loss of the season and currently holds a 7-2 overall record. The Golden Knights return to the mat this weekend when the travel to Kutztown for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, January 28.
