ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon wrestling team traveled to nationally ranked Pitt-Johstown Wednesday night but came out on the wrong end of a 33-6 final to the eighth-ranked team in the country.
Pitt-Johnstown, who is also ranked second regionally, won eight of the 10 bouts, including a string of six straight to finish the meet. The Wildcats added bonus points in five weight classes.
Picking up Gannon's first win of the night was
Matt Turek (Painesville, Ohio / Madison) at 125 pounds. The redshirt freshman, who is ranked sixth in the latest regional rankings, knocked off the region's second-ranked grappler in Dave Fogel by a 5-1 score. For Turek, it marks the second straight dual win over a regionally ranked opponent after defeating Desmond Moore from Kutztown last week. The win gave Gannon what would be its only lead of the night at 3-0.
Adding Gannon's only other points was
Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois) at 149 pounds. The redshirt senior improved to 10-0 in duals this season with a 11-4 decision over Tyler Chesney. Swope, who is ranked fifth nationally, holds a 12-3 overall record this season and remains undefeated against Division II opponents.
Gannon fell to 7-4 in dual action this season while Pitt-Johnstown improved to 9-3. Gannon returns home for the first time since December 7 this weekend to host Shippesburg Friday, February 3. Match time is set for 8 p.m.
