Gannon's Herold and Bellanca Named to Daktronics All-Atlantic Region Baseball Teams

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon's Shayne Herold (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy) and Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) have been named to the Daktronics All-Atlantic Region baseball teams released Friday morning. Herold landed a spot on the first team and will move to the national ballot for all-america consideration. Bellanca was selected to the second team.

Herold was nearly unbeatable on the mound for the Golden Knights in 2013. The redshirt senior was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Pitcher of the Year and selected to the All-PSAC Western Division first team after compiling a 9-0 record with three saves and a 1.09 earned run average prior to the conference tournament.

The LeRoy, N.Y., native suffered his first loss against eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg at the conference tournament. He struck out 61 hitters compared to 15 walks this season, along with a .208 opponent batting average in 64 2/3 innings. Herold finished second among PSAC pitchers in saves (3), third in victories (9), fifth in ERA (2.09) and fifth in opponent batting average (.208). He ranks 20th among all NCAA Division II pitchers in victories, 22nd in WHIP (0.96), 31st in hits allowed per nine innings (6.54) and 55th in ERA.

Herold limited opposing hitters to a .204 average (19-93) with runners on base and a .253 mark (20-79) with two outs. He allowed two runs or less during six of seven starts and didn't allow a run during nine of his 15 overall appearances. Herold struck out at least six hitters during every starting assignment except one.

Bellanca previously earned All-PSAC Western Division honors with a .325 batting average, a .375 slugging percentage and a .410 on-base percentage. The redshirt sophomore started 21 games at first base, 10 in right field, five at designated hitter, three in left field and two at catcher. He produced 25 runs, six doubles, 14 RBIs and 10 walks. Defensively, Bellanca made only two errors in 186 fielding opportunities.

The Grand Island, N.Y., native hit .333 (18-54) with runners on base and .333 (11-33) with runners in scoring position. Bellanca had a team-best 12 multiple-hit performances. He went back-to-back games without a hit only four times this season.

The Daktronics All-Region teams are sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The teams are voted on by the NCAA Division II members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA). The 2013 Daktronics All-America baseball teams are scheduled to be released Friday, May 24.
