ERIE, Pa. - Sophomore
Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wisc. / Wisconsin Lutheran) of the Gannon women's volleyball team continues to collect postseason honors. Kren was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America honorable-mention selection announced by the association Wednesday. The sophomore was the sole selection from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
"This is a well-deserved honor for Hannah, who had a tremendous season and who has worked hard to become a great all-around player," said head coach
Matt Darling. "She played her best volleyball in the most important matches of the season, and that's what you want in a player. I am proud of her."
Kren is the fourth volleyball student-athlete in the program's 41-year history to achieve all-america status and the first since Lauren Sazama, who was named to the 2012 Daktronics Division II All-America Volleyball First Team. Kathy Wotus is the only other Lady Knight to be named to an all-america first team, landing a spot on the 1992 AVCA First Team.
Gannon Hall of Famer Heather Petras was named to the 1994 AVCA (AVCA) All-America second team. Kren also earned a spot this season on the All-PSAC Western Division, Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, AVCA Division II All-Atlantic Region first teams, as well as the NCAA Atlantic Regional All-Tournament Team.
Kren led the Lady Knights with 16 kills and 11 digs in the team's opening-round loss to Seton Hill at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Nov. 20, hosted by top-seed Wheeling Jesuit at the Alma Grace McDonough Center. She earned a double-double in her fifth consecutive match, finishing the season with 20 double-doubles. Attacking at a clip of .216, the sophomore finished the match with a team-best 19 points and added four block assists, two assists and a service ace.
In her last 18 appearances, the Waukesha, Wisc., native registered 16 of her 20 double-doubles this season. She led the Lady Knights in total kills (379), kills per set (3.75) and points per set (4.16). She also ranked second in digs per set (3.85). In addition, she finished fourth in service aces per set (0.19) and blocks per set (0.39). The sophomore concluded the season atop the conference in kills per set.
Kren recorded 15 at least kills in 12 matches, eclipsing 20 in three matches. She established a new career-high with 27 kills along with 17 digs in the regular-season home finale against Clarion Nov. 1.
Gannon compiled a 24-7 overall record this season. For the sixth consecutive season, the Lady Knights have reached the 20-win mark, clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
"This is an individual award, of course, but awards like this also say something about the team; we had a good year, and I think all of us will feel good about that," said Darling.
