Gannon Women's Swim Team Wins Three Gold Medals on Final Day of PSAC Championships; Finishes Fourth

  • Event: 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Swimming Championships (Graham Aquatic Center  - York, Pa.)
  • Competing Teams: Bloomsburg, Clarion, California (Pa.), East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana (Pa.), Gannon, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Shippensburg, Mansfield and West Chester.
  • Result: Gannon finished fourth place out of 12 teams with 385 points.
  • The Short Story: Senior Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), junior Abby Wu (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team all captured gold medals Sunday during the final day of the 2016 PSAC Championships hosted by the Graham Aquatic Center in York, Pennsylvania. The performances helped the Lady Knights finish fourth out of 12 teams.

  • Lydic - Finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 51.73 seconds ... was 0.10 second better than the next fastest swimmer.
  • Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) - Placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 52.22 seconds ... was 0.49 second behind Lydic.
  • Wu - Finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.69 seconds ... was 1.17 second better than the next fastest swimmer.
  • 400-Yard Freestyle Relay Team - The group of senior Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens), freshman Courteney Hubert (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), Nottingham and Lydic finished first with an NCAA "B" cut time of three minutes and 28.51 seconds ... was 0.70 second better than the next fastest team.

  • Lydic - Broke the school's 100-yard freestyle record with a prelim time of 51.46 seconds ... reset her own mark of 51.60 set in 2013-14.

EVENT NOTES
  • The PSAC Championships concluded Sunday with the 1,650-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard freestyle relay.
  • Sunday was the final of four days of championship action.
  • Lydic and Wu captured the third and fourth gold medals of the weekend by a Gannon female swimmer after Nottingham won the 50-yard freestyle Friday night and Summers touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly Saturday night.
  • Prior to this weekend, no Gannon female swimmer had won a gold medal since the University joined the conference before the 2008-09 academic year.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team is the first Gannon relay team to ever win a PSAC title - female or male.
  • Gannon earned 14 All-PSAC honors during the conference championships.
  • The Lady Knights recorded 10 NCAA "B" cut times, won five gold medals and broke two school records at the PSAC Championships.
  • Gannon finished in fourth place for the second consecutive year, marking its fifth consecutive top-five finish.

  • Gannon swimmers who recorded an NCAA "B" cut at any time throughout the 2015-16 season will now await word on possible invitations to the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championships March 9-12 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
