Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Concludes Bucknell Tourney By Falling Twice Against Top-20 NCAA Division I Programs

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team finished the Bucknell Tournament with a pair of losses against top-20 NCAA Division I programs Sunday at the Kinney Natatorium. The Lady Knights began the day with an 18-6 setback against No. 15 Princeton, before falling 19-6 against No. 20 Wagner.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE
  • Gannon struck first when sophomore Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley Liberal Arts) scored 53 seconds into the affair.
  • Princeton countered with the final five goals of the first quarter.
  • Gannon opened the second quarter like the first, netting the first goal on sophomore Alison Cooney's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tally 35 seconds after the opening sprint-off.
  • However, like the first quarter, Princeton responded with a run. This time it consisted of four straight goals for a 9-2 lead.
  • Sophomore Abby Quinn (McKean, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored at the 2:57 mark, before another Princeton goal gave the Tigers a 10-3 advantage at the intermission.
  • Princeton opened the third quarter with four more goals to grab firm control at 14-3.
  • The final 8:17 was played on even terms with Princeton holding a 4-3 scoring edge during that time span.
  • Cooney, Williamson and sophomore Colleen Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) produced Gannon scores during the final eight minutes and 17 seconds.

MATCH NOTES
  • Cooney and Williamson led the Gannon scoring attack with two goals each.
  • Bolmanski and Quinn accounted for the other two scores.
  • Junior Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started her eighth consecutive match in goal, making three saves in three quarters of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO
  • Wagner came out of the gates on fire, scoring the first four goals during the opening three minutes and 46 seconds.
  • Cooney put Gannon on the board with 3:05 left in the first quarter.
  • Wagner countered with a pair of goals during the final 2:51 of the first quarter to grab a 6-1 lead.
  • The Seahawks then shut out the Lady Knights 5-0 during the second frame and went to halftime with an 11-1 edge.
  • Gannon out-scored Wagner 3-2 during the third period. Cooney, Williamson and sophomore Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) tallied goals during the stanza.
  • Wagner iced the contest with a 6-2 scoring edge during the final period. Barr and Williamson accounted for Gannon's goals during the final eight minutes.

MATCH NOTES
  • Barr, Cooney and Williamson accounted for all of Gannon's scoring with two goals each.
  • Bolmanski, Barr and Williamson highlighted the defensive unit with two steals apiece.
  • Cooney earned a team-high three exclusions.
  • Emily Rodriguez started her ninth consecutive match in goal, making six saves in the first half.
  • Vieira relieved Rodriguez at halftime and turning away two shots while allowing three scores in the second half.
